Below are demos and games from the entire Silent Hill series. Since I live in the United States most of my releases are US editions but I am in the process of collecting variations from other countries!

(1999) PSX

Silent Hill Official Playstation Magazine Demo (US)

Catalogue #: SLPM 80363

Silent Hill, First Edition (US)
System: Playstation 1 (PS1)
Released: January 1999 in America
Catalogue #: SLUS-00707
Purchased: NEW, January 1999
Where: Local Funcoland

My very first Silent Hill purchase! The first American retail edition of the game that comes in a jewel case with an English instruction manual. There are two slightly different versions of the black US edition. There are some like mine which have a more muted silver front cover with the collage on the front with a very low contrast which were part of the initial release. Later prints before the Greatest Hits edition still had the black Playstation spine but the cover became a high contrast black and white image. This and the US Greatest Hits edition of Silent Hill are the only ones known to be uncensored.

Silent Hill, First Edition (Sealed) (JPN)
System: Playstation 1 (PS1)
Released: March 1999 in Japan
Catalogue #: SLPM 86192
Purchased: NEW, February 2009
Where: Japan Yahoo! Auctions through Rinkya.com

A sealed Japanese retail first edition of the game. You can tell it’s not a general Asia release from the red triangle warning present on the front cover and the “For Japan Only” notation on the back. The copy I purchased also has a Famitsu Weekly sticker with Necky the Fox… I’m not sure what it says though.

Silent Hill, First Edition (Sealed) (JPN)
System: Playstation 1 (PS1)
Released: March 1999 in Asia
Catalogue #: SCPS-45380
Purchased: NEW, February 2009
Where: Japan Yahoo! Auctions through Rinkya.com

A sealed Asian retail first edition of the game. You can tell it’s not a Japanese release from the missing red triangle warning on the front cover and the missing “For Japan Only” on the back.

Silent Hill, First Edition (PAL)
System: Playstation 1 (PS1)
Released: August 1999 in Europe
Catalogue #: SLPM 86192
Purchased: USED, May 2009
Where: ebay.uk

A first edition PAL release of Silent Hill. This PAL release of Silent Hill was unfortunately censored in which the Mumbler in Midwich Elementary were removed and replaced by Claw Fingers. Even though it was censorned the PAL release did include an in game article regarding the fire Alessa was burned in that was not included in the US or Japanese release. You can find the article in Nowhere on the 3rd Level. I’m not sure why it wasn’t included on the US or Japanese releases. Included with the PAL release were several leaflets containing Silent Hill product information. On one you can see an advertisement for the Silent Hill comic that was never released!

Silent Hill, Konami the Best Edition (JPN)
System: Playstation 1 (PS1)
Released: April 2000 in Japan
Catalogue #: SLPM 86498
Purchased: USED, May 2009
Where: Japan Yahoo! Auctions through Rinkya.com

A re-release of Silent Hill in Japan that features Lisa Garland on the cover. I have yet to find a sealed version but I was able to grab this unsealed one with its original obi!

(2001) GBA

Silent Hill: Play Novel (JPN)
System: Game Boy Advance (GBA)
Released: March 2001 in Japan
Catalogue #: AGB-P-ASHJ
Purchased: USED, November 2008
Where: ebay.com

A Japanese retail version of the GBA game. Came with box, game cartridge and Japanese only manual. I have read that this game was only available in limited quantities. I have not played the actual game cartridge since I don’t own a GBA but I have played and completed Harry and Cybil’s quests though a Japanese ROM and text translations found on gamefaqs. Even though most of the events would be considered AU when compared to current Silent Hill canon it’s definitely an interesting read! I really wish they made an English version of this game!

(2001) PS2 | XBOX | PC

Silent Hill 2 Demo (JPN)
System: Playstation 2 Demo
Released: 2001 in Japan
Catalogue #: SLPM 80363
Purchased: USED, May 2009
Where: ebay.com

A short demo disc of Silent Hill 2 ( mine did not come with the demo’s original slipcase). I’m not sure where this was given out but I assume it was some sort of trade show in Japan. Ratiocinator of Letter from Silent Heaven fame was able to play the demo and was awesome enough to tell me what’s on it:

On the main screen you have three options:

Prologue
Battle
Options

Options are normal except you can’t tab over to the extra options (such as changing noise grain, blood color, etc.).

Prologue has you starting at the beginning. You grab the map outta your car and head down the observation stairs. After you take just a few steps (after the stairs when it loads the lake path) it almost immediately loads/spawns you to the gate before the cemetery/Angela. After Angela’s graveyard cutscene, you proceed like normal to the exit gate from the cemetery. Upon opening the gate the trial ends.

Battle takes place when you first enter Woodside Apartments. A lot of the Lying Figures aren’t wandering the halls. Only a few here and there. Anyway, you’re already equipped with the flashlight/gun. The mannequin on the floor where you get the flashlight never gets up. The scream (“What was that? Some kind of noise North from here…”) happens too and PH is behind the bars as usual. You get the key in the hole in the wall, solve the clock puzzle, proceed to the second floor. The trial ends when you enter the room with PH raping the mannequins. You see about 3 seconds of the cutscene before the trial ends.

Silent Hill 2, First Edition (Sealed) (JPN)
System: Playstation 2 (PS2)
Released: September 27, 2001 in Japan
Catalogue #: SLPM 65051
Purchased: NEW, September 2009
Where: GameforFUN.com

This is a sealed Japanese first edition of Silent Hill 2. I’m really happy to own a sealed copy (I’d never thought I’d find one!). On the back of the game box you can see the images of creatures originally used on a Silent Hill 2 promotional poster that ended up having to be removed from subways because people thought it looked too disturbing! Personally I don’t think it looks that bad.
